Frequently asked questions about Ecological Stones and Bricks for coating

1. What are the Ecological Stones and Bricks?

The natural alternative to natural stone… It is a product for coating originated in the early 60’s in the United States as an alternative to natural stone.
In effect in the USA the laws that control and protect the natural resources are very strict. It is made through moulds obtained from natural stone, in which is poured a mixture of Portland Cement, inert substance ( siliceous sand ), light aggregates ( clay, perlite…), water.
According to the origin, the colouring can be.
Superficial: it is obtained through an absorption process of natural iron oxides and additives that guarantee the resistance to atmospheric agents; In the whole mass: the natural iron oxides are inserted inside the mixture of the raw ingredients.
The pieces, once dry (by natural solidification of the cement or by desiccation), are packed in proper paper or polythene boxes with content varying according the model.

2. Why Ecological?

Because they are not extracted from quarries so they do not impoverish the environment and the nature.
Besides, our products are transpiring because they are made with natural raw material deprived of resin.

3. Why should I choose the Ecological Stones and Bricks?

Because they are absolutely similar to the natural ones ( to the touch and to the sight);
Because the natural stone is a resource in depletion: the quarrels are limited by landscape and excavation bounds.
Because they are easy to lay ( can be applied to old or new surfaces, to internal or external areas without sustaining problems due to their light weight);
Because, considering the price of the natural material, but in particular the price of the laying, the ecological stone is much more convenient;
Because the available colours can be modulated according your choice;
Because they are practical (in boxes) and ready to use;
Because they can be applied by anyone familiar with do-it-yourself;
Because they have a limited thickness;
Because they are transpiring.

4. Is it a reliable and durable material?

Yes, it is a solid, reliable and durable material.
Created to coat external surfaces, it was submitted to numerous tests that guarantee quality and an excellent duration through time(if used according the rules and the instructions given).

5. Is it heavy? What is its thickness?

Besides the aesthetic beauty, another quality of the Ecological Stones and Bricks is the limited thickness and therefore a reduced weight. This fact makes even the most difficult architectonical projects much more simple and less expensive.

6. Is it necessary a professional for laying it or you can do it by yourself?

You can do it yourself because it is a product created for DIY.
Naturally, it will depend on the manual skills of the person who is going to do the work, and obviously, on the degree of difficulty and the extension of the job.
Those who have good skills and time to dedicate can coat a small wall, fireplace or pillar using simple and proper tools.

7. Can it be applied to a already coloured wall?

Yes, of course, with a few simple steps:
Pick the wall frequently and with energy to create an ideal rough surface ( the fixing of the coating depends on how well this job is done); Remove completely the paint and mortar to obtain a rough surface.

8. I have a wall in plasterboard, can I coat it using Ecological Stones and Bricks?

They can be safely applied to plasterboard, since the structure ( panel wall or wall linings) was made respecting a distance of 30/40 cm between the studs.
If the wall is already built and it is not known the distance between the studs in alternative it must be applied a second layer of plasterboard on it.

9. Can I use it in external areas?

These products were born exactly to embellish the exterior of our houses.
The materials used, natural and selected carefully, and the high production technology give to this material a long durability even for external coatings. Avoiding the cleaning using acid or water jet cleaner, the reconstituted stone guarantees a great resistance to the atmospheric agents: rain, sun, wind and snow which, with the process of time, will make them even more beautiful and similar to the natural ones.

10. Does it functional as a thermal and acoustic insulation?

The ecological stone is born as aesthetic decoration and does not have similar characteristics as a thermal insulating.
But on the other hand if they present a thickness varying from 2 to 5,5 cm ( according to the material chosen), also the ecological stones and bricks give their contribute as any other construction material.

11. Can it be applied to thermal insulation boards?

The laying of ecological stones and bricks is possible only when the boards are firmly anchored to the holding structure and only where there are mechanical resistance conditions to support a coating of about 50-60Kg/sqm.
In the case of already existent thermal insulation boards that were properly assembled to the holding structure, proceed this way:
- attach to the structure a zinc welded wire netting of 2-3 mm, of 5x5 chain link using proper nylon and steel plugs ( with the right length and technical characteristics);
- after it gets dry and hard you can proceed with the laying of the ecological stones and bricks.

12. What can be done with a wet wall?

The ecological stones and bricks are not dehumidifying materials, even if they transpire well. But taking a few precautions they can be applied to walls tending to be wet. On walls with strong humidity it is recommended to remove the damaged painting and restore it using dehumidifying paint. In the case of light humidity, when the paint is not detached, you can proceed with the laying. However is always recommended, after cleaning the wall very well, to attach to it a zinc welded wire netting of 2-3 mm, of 5x5 chain link using plugs in the appropriate number and distance, according to the characteristics of the wall.

13. Does it get stained? If yes, how can it be clean?

Yes, as everything else the stone can get stained. Possible stains or white spots left by the use of stucco while laying the stones can be removed using water, or cleaning gently using a cotton cloth humidified with water and wine vinegar. Never use metal brushes, high pressure water jets or acid as they can damage the stone. It is better to protect the stone, both for interior or exterior areas, using a protective treatment applied using a brush or spray (airless) that does not alter the stone aspect but makes it resistant to dirt present in the acid rain and eases the removal of dust.

14. How can I remove the dust?

Simply using a soft dusting brush or a vacuum cleaner with dusting brush.
Obviously, the use of a protective treatment on the interior surface of a house, prevents dust accumulation.

give a luminous and warm final result;
permit a fast and easy cleaning.

3. Should they be treated before laying, like the clay (terracotta)?

No, they do not need a treatment before laying, but it is recommended the use of a protection treatment before filling the joints, which permits a complete and easy cleaning of the traces of stucco left on the floor while laying.

4. How do you stucco them?

Using an appropriate mortar bag, fill the joints using MALTA DI RIEMPIMENTO FUGHE (mortar) trying to limit the material, as much as possible, to fill only the joints between the pieces. Eliminate the excess of stucco using a damp sponge, since it was used a protection treatment before filling the joints.
The mortar (malta di riempimento fughe) is available in three colours, according to products to which they are associated: grey (grigio), stone (pietra) and rosy (rosato).

5. How are they cleaned?

They can be cleaned using normal neutral detergent for floors commercially available.
Avoid the use of products containing hydrochloric acid or similar substances.

Yes, diluting an appropriate product called LATEX to the mortar. That will give a bigger elasticity to the stucco.

9. Are they easy to transport?

Yes, the pieces of thickness equal or superior to 35 mm can be transported since they are fixed to a concrete structure.
